Cuisine Love.. for Cupcakes! An Apron Tutorial :)
This uses approx 1.5 m of fabric.
I used 3 fabrics (blue, cupcakes, and
butterflies).
Plus some ric rac.
I used the same bib pattern pieces as my Cuisine Love, adjusting for size. You can make
your own pattern pieces like I did! Below is copied from my other pattern, so
you don't have to look between pages.
Bib Pattern Pieces
Cut 2 bib top panels. Start
with an 11 ½” x 5 ½” rectangle piece of Fabric. (I used blue for both.)
Measure 1 ¾” in on each side of the bib top, and
mark. Draw a line from this mark to the bottom corner. Cut. It's now a
rhombus shape. (see photo below!)
Cut 2 bib bottom panels. Start with a 13” x 7 ¼” rectangle
piece of Fabric.
One in Main Fabric (cupcakes), one in Fabric#3 (blue.)
At the bottom of each side, measure over 3” and mark on the bottom edge.
(This will be a dart fold.)
From the dart fold marks, make a mark ½” on both sides at the raw
edge.
Also from the dart fold mark, measure 5” up. That will be how long the
dart is.
Draw a line from the top of the dart to the ½” marks that you made on
both sides of the dart fold on the bottom raw edge. You will be sewing on these
lines.
From the bottom corner of the panel, mark ¼” up the side.
From this mark, draw a line to the dart sewing mark (that is 1/2” from
dart fold). Cut.
From the top corners, measure in 1 ¼” and mark. Draw a line from this
mark to the newly cut bottom corner marks. Mark a line ¼” down from the top raw
edge.
From the sides, measure in 2” and mark. From these marks, draw a line to
the top corners. Cut from marks to the corners, and from mark to mark.
Bib
For the bib bottom, start by ironing the dart fold. RST, iron along the fold line.
Pin in place.
Stitch along the sewing line that you drew (1/2” from the fold at the
bottom, to 5” from the bottom at the fold.)
Press seams towards the middle.
Repeat for other bib bottom.
After sewing the darts into the bottom bib piece, you will see that it
is now a rectangle shape, not that weird shape that we cut!
RST, pin FRONT bib top (blue) to FRONT bib bottom (cupcakes). Sew.
Repeat for BACK bib top and BACK bib bottom.
Pin ric rac across the seam of the bib front. Sew in place.
RST, pin bib FRONT to bib BACK at the sides. Sew the bib together at the
sides only. Press seams open. Turn right side out. Press approx ½” hemline into
the top of the bib.
Skirt
The skirt of the apron is just cut to fit your size. This was a
rectangular piece, about 26" x 15". Next time I will cut the skirt
30" x 12".... then I would round the skirt edge after I
figure out how much I want it gathered.
I gathered the skirt waist edge with a few pin tucks at both sides of
the skirt, leaving the center (tummy) area flat. I also rounded the corners of
the skirt to make it more feminine.
Ruffle
The ruffle was 4" x 90" before gathering.
Cut 2 pieces 4" x 45". RST, sew them together at a short end.
Press seam open.
WST, fold ruffle lengthwise and press. Baste. Gather to fit the size of
the skirt edge.
I sewed the ruffle to the wrong side of skirt, so that the seam was
showing in the front.
Bias Tape
Then I added a bias to cover that raw edge. I used a bias Tape tutorial
to make the blue binding, and figured it out. Something like this: Bias Tape tutorial.
Waist Bands
Cut 2 waistbands: 2 1/2" x 25"
Fold under 1/4" on one long side of both bands.
Fold over 1/2" on other long side of both bands.
Ironing the fabric before pinning usually means that my pieces will
match up when I pin them together!
I pinned the skirt to the waist band at the 1/2" fold edge,
matching the centers. I think they do it like this because when we finally sew
it all together, you won't be able to see these layers.
The waist bands will be too long compared to the skirt. Fold the waist
band raw edges under, matching up to the side edges of the skirt's ruffles.
Press. Pin for now.
Then I pinned the bib to the waist band (at the 1/4" fold edge)
after finding the center of each piece.
Neck Ties are 24" x 2 1/2". I cut the ends at a 45 angle to make
them pointy.
RST folded lengthwise, stitched together on two sides. Clip corners.
Turn right side out, and edge stitch three sides.
Repeat for other neck tie.
Waist Ties are 3" x 36". I cut the ends at a 45 angle to make them
pointy.
RST folded lengthwise, stitched together on two sides. Clip corners.
Turn right side out, and edge stitch three sides.
Repeat for other waist tie.
The tied circle pocket was an inspiration. I played around with tissue,
and old patterns, and made my own.
Make Your Pattern Pocket:
I started out with a circle, and then made it have "bunny ears" with rounded ends. The inside circle opening was about the size of a dollar coin, and matched up to the ties pieces, making the final shape almost like a teardrop.
Caution:The longer the ears, the longer the ties.
You need 2 layers of fabric to sew this pocket. It could be both of the same fabric, two fabrics, whatever you wish. I made mine from my Blue material and the Butterflies print.
RST, Pin pattern to fabrics. Cut the outside edge, then split the
"bunny ears" down the middle. It looks like a odd-shaped horseshoe.
RST, sew pockets together, leaving an opening for turning. I left about
2" opening on the bottom.
Clip curved edges.
Press the seams of the 2" opening under, matching it to the seam you just made.
Turn right side out. Press. Edge stitch.
Final Assembly
Place your pocket to apron skirt, wherever you wish. Usually about
4" from the side, and just below the waist band. Sew in place.
Pin neck ties and waist ties in desired locations, making sure they are
between the fabric layers.
Stitch around the open edge of the bib to secure the neck ties.
Stitch around all four sides of the waistband, securing the waist ties
and bib.
And that's that!
