Like a Rainbow ~ Log Cabin Quilt

Like a Rainbow ~ Log Cabin Quilt by Auntie Dem

My first quilt attempt. Grandma did it, why can’t I?

I found 2 sources that seemed simple to follow:

To begin, I needed a design. After much deliberation, I couldn’t decide on one colour/theme. So I used almost every colour I had! I guesstimated how much I needed.  Each block has 6 “light” and 6 “dark” logs. I found that having 8+ fabric strip selections per side worked well.

Then I cut my fabric strips and center squares.  I used what I had on hand, and used up some scrappy little pieces. I did not cut the strips into individual pieces until it was time to sew.

The strips are 1.5” wide, allowing for a scant ¼” seam allowance on each side.
Center squares are 2.5”, same seam allowance.

When it’s time to sew, have your ironing board set to sitting height at your sewing machine. You need to press your piece after EVERY seam, so have your iron handy!!

Following the directions from the sources above, I made 72 blocks.  8 wide x 9 tall.
I sewed the blocks together into panels, 2 blocks  wide x 3 blocks, totaling = 12 panels.

I have yet to sew my panels together, but will HAND QUILT this.
I will update this when I finish this project, as I need to resource How to Finish a Quilt. Lol

… on a side note, my (retired) dad came by to check out my bees, and saw my sewing. He told me how me made his mother (Grandma!) her quilting racks, as she did all of her quilts by hand. (Crossing my fingers that racks are in my near future…) J
